Former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State General Sani Abacha, Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, has rejected Abacha death claims made by a former operative of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Amachree, describing the account as false. Speaking with journalists in Kaduna, Al-Mustapha said the version of events contained in the former DSS official’s book did not accurately reflect the circumstances surrounding the late military ruler’s final moments.
The remarks followed the publication of claims by the former DSS operative regarding Abacha’s death. Al-Mustapha alleged that the account presented in the book was influenced by individuals who encouraged the author to publish information he maintained was inaccurate.
According to Al-Mustapha, “The boy was asked to write the lies by others. I have all the CCTV footages of what happened in my custody, so what he said are not true.” He maintained that he possesses evidence capable of contradicting the assertions made in the publication, insisting that the claims do not represent what transpired.
The former Chief Security Officer said the public should disregard the statements contained in the book, arguing that it was inappropriate to make allegations against a deceased individual who could no longer respond. He stated, “Just ignore his lies. It’s bad to say such things on someone that is dead.”
The latest comments add to ongoing public discussions surrounding historical accounts of the administration of the late General Sani Abacha, who served as Nigeria’s Head of State from 1993 to 1998. Over the years, various publications and commentaries have presented differing accounts of events during that period, with some attracting public debate and responses from former officials who served in the administration.
Al-Mustapha’s response specifically challenges the accuracy of the former DSS operative’s account and reiterates his position that the claims regarding Abacha’s final moments are unfounded. While he asserted that he possesses CCTV footage to support his position, no additional evidence was presented during his interaction with journalists.
The Abacha death claims remain a subject of public interest following the publication of the former DSS official’s account. Al-Mustapha has urged Nigerians to dismiss the allegations and maintained that the narrative contained in the book does not reflect the events surrounding the late Head of State’s death.
