The Lagos State Vehicle Inspection Service, VIS, has impounded 38 buses for allegedly operating illegally under the Bus Reform Initiative, BRI.
The buses were reportedly operating under the BRI programme without the licences and official approval required from the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority, LAMATA.
According to information from the Information Department of the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the vehicles were intercepted during an enforcement operation along the Island route, covering the Ajah to Sura corridor.
The VIS impounds buses operation forms part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts to enforce compliance with regulations governing commercial transportation across the state.
Authorities said operators participating in the BRI scheme are expected to obtain the necessary licences and approvals before commencing operations.
The enforcement action also comes with a warning to commercial transport operators across Lagos to comply fully with approved transportation regulations.
The state government urged operators to ensure their vehicles and operations meet all applicable requirements to avoid enforcement action.
It further warned that transport operators found violating the regulations would face appropriate sanctions.
The latest enforcement exercise highlights the government’s continued monitoring of commercial bus operations and its insistence that operators comply with the regulatory framework governing public transportation in Lagos.
