Oyo electoral commission deepens NSCDC partnership ahead of credible LG elections

The Oyo electoral commission has strengthened its collaboration with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) as part of ongoing preparations to ensure a peaceful and credible conduct of local government elections in the state. The engagement is aimed at reinforcing electoral security, safeguarding materials, and promoting voter confidence across all polling units.

The renewed engagement comes as the state electoral body continues preparations for the forthcoming local government polls. The commission has maintained that its mandate includes delivering transparent, fair and lawful elections in line with constitutional provisions guiding state electoral bodies.

During strategic meetings with security agencies, officials of the electoral commission emphasised the need for coordinated action to prevent electoral disruptions and ensure smooth logistics during the voting process. The Oyo electoral commission noted that collaboration with the NSCDC is critical to maintaining order before, during and after the elections.

The NSCDC, in response, reaffirmed its readiness to provide operational support through the deployment of personnel across polling centres, collation venues and strategic locations. The Corps stated that its role in election security remains focused on protecting electoral infrastructure and ensuring compliance with lawful conduct during electoral exercises.

The Oyo electoral commission also highlighted that the collaboration forms part of broader inter-agency coordination involving other security organisations, aimed at strengthening electoral integrity. These engagements are designed to improve preparedness, enhance intelligence sharing and reduce risks associated with electoral violence or disruption.

Officials of the commission have repeatedly stressed their commitment to conducting elections that meet statutory standards and are acceptable to stakeholders. They have also called for continuous engagement with political actors, civil society groups and the media to promote transparency and public awareness ahead of the polls.

Security agencies, including the NSCDC and the Nigeria Police Force, have assured stakeholders of their readiness to provide adequate security coverage during the election period. Their responsibilities include maintaining law and order, protecting electoral officials and ensuring the safe conduct of voters.

The Oyo electoral commission stated that its preparations are guided by legal frameworks governing local government elections in the state, with emphasis on fairness, inclusiveness and adherence to electoral guidelines. Stakeholders have also been urged to cooperate with security agencies to ensure a peaceful electoral process.

Observers note that enhanced collaboration between electoral bodies and security institutions is essential for strengthening confidence in local government elections, which play a key role in grassroots governance and democratic participation.
