The Federal Government has suspended the planned Eko Bridge closure in Lagos, following concerns raised by commuters, transport operators and residents over the potential impact on traffic movement and economic activities within the state. The decision was announced after consultations involving relevant government agencies and stakeholders connected to the rehabilitation project.
The proposed Eko Bridge closure was earlier scheduled as part of ongoing repair and maintenance works aimed at improving structural safety and road conditions on one of Lagos’ major transport corridors. Authorities had initially planned traffic diversion measures to allow contractors carry out rehabilitation activities on critical sections of the bridge.
According to officials, the suspension became necessary after public feedback indicated that the planned closure could significantly worsen congestion across adjoining roads and alternative routes already experiencing heavy traffic volumes. The Federal Ministry of Works stated that discussions are ongoing to identify a more suitable implementation strategy that would reduce disruption to commuters and businesses.
