Nigeria, UK Move to Strengthen Security Ties on Counterterrorism

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated that Nigeria and the United Kingdom are set to strengthen their security partnership, with discussions on counterterrorism and regional stability planned during his meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Tinubu made the disclosure during a state banquet hosted by King Charles III at Windsor Castle as part of his official visit to the United Kingdom.

The visit marks the first state visit by a Nigerian president to the UK in 37 years.

Nigeria and the United Kingdom maintain longstanding diplomatic and institutional ties.

Nigerian legal and parliamentary systems have historical links to British constitutional and common law traditions, reflecting decades of cooperation between both countries.

Speaking at the event, Tinubu said Nigeria faces ongoing security challenges linked to terrorism and instability in the West African region, particularly in the Sahel.

He said, “Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability.”

The President added, “In confronting these threats, partnership with the United Kingdom remains essential and I look forward to my meeting with Prime Minister Keir Starmer.”

Tinubu also referenced historical ties between both countries, including his time in exile in the United Kingdom during the military regime of General Sani Abacha.

He said he received protection from British authorities during that period.

The state banquet was attended by senior members of the British royal family, including King Charles III, Queen Camilla, Prince William, and Catherine, Princess of Wales.

The President also highlighted contributions of Nigerians in the UK, particularly in the National Health Service, where Nigerian-trained professionals form a significant part of the workforce.

The planned discussions between Nigeria and the United Kingdom are expected to focus on security cooperation, including counterterrorism efforts and regional stability in West Africa.

The visit also includes engagements that may cover trade, investment, defence, and cultural relations between both countries, according to official statements.
