PDP Elects New Bayelsa Leaders, Says It Will Reclaim State in 2027

The Peoples Democratic Party in Bayelsa State has elected new state executives and reaffirmed its intention to reclaim the state in the 2027 general elections, party officials said at its recent congress.

Bayelsa State has been governed by the All Progressives Congress since 2020, after the party’s candidate won the governorship election held that year.

The PDP, which previously held significant influence in the state, has been in opposition at the state level since that transition. Party leadership elections are scheduled periodically to renew mandates and prepare for upcoming electoral contests.

At the PDP state congress held in Yenagoa, the party elected new executives for its Bayelsa State chapter. Hon. Koku Akpojene was elected Chairman of the Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party, while other key positions were filled by party members from across the state.

The full list of elected officers includes representatives for various wards and local government areas.

In remarks during the congress, Akpojene and other party officials said the newly elected leadership will focus on strengthening the party’s organisational structures at the grassroots level.

The officials said this effort is part of preparatory work ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party’s Bayelsa leadership also pledged to engage with stakeholders and community members to build unity within the party and enhance outreach.

Officials said they aim to increase participation in party affairs and clarify the PDP’s platform to residents of the state.

During the congress, party members also discussed internal arrangements for voter mobilisation, membership drives and strategy meetings to prepare for the next cycle of elections.

The event drew attendance from PDP members, supporters and party elders from across Bayelsa State.

The election of new state executives positions the PDP to coordinate its organisational activities as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Bayelsa State is considered a strategic political landscape in the Niger Delta region, and political parties often intensify internal restructuring and grassroots engagement ahead of major elections.

The choice of leadership and planned mobilisation activities will determine how the PDP positions itself among Bayelsa voters in the lead‑up to the governorship, National Assembly, and presidential contests in the 2027 election cycle.
