COVID-19 response intensified as NCDC, Cross River activate containment measures after new case

COVID-19 response has been intensified in Cross River State following the confirmation of a fresh COVID-19 case involving a 53-year-old foreign national. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) said it is working with state health authorities to strengthen surveillance, contact tracing, and containment efforts after the detection of the case. The COVID-19 response was activated to prevent further spread and ensure coordinated public health action across affected communities and health facilities.

Nigeria’s COVID-19 management system has remained in place since the first confirmed case in 2020, coordinated nationally by the NCDC and supported by state health ministries. Over time, surveillance systems, laboratory capacity, and emergency response structures were strengthened to manage new infections and potential outbreaks.

In Cross River State, health authorities have previously recorded sporadic cases, with the last confirmed infection reported in 2022 before the latest development. The reappearance of a case has triggered renewed attention on preparedness and early detection systems within the state health framework.

The Cross River State Ministry of Health confirmed that the new case involved a 53-year-old foreign national who developed symptoms after arriving in Nigeria and later tested positive at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital. Health officials stated that the patient is receiving treatment and responding positively to care.

According to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, the COVID-19 response team has been deployed in collaboration with state authorities to ensure rapid containment. Measures include contact tracing, line listing of exposed individuals, and continuous monitoring of identified contacts within the incubation period.

State health authorities also confirmed that an Emergency Operations Centre has been activated to coordinate response activities. Rapid response teams have been deployed to areas linked to the patient, while surveillance activities have been intensified across health facilities.

Officials stated that there is currently no evidence of widespread community transmission, noting that containment measures are focused on preventing further spread through early detection and isolation protocols. Public health advisories have also been issued, encouraging residents to maintain hygiene practices, report symptoms early, and follow official health guidance as part of the ongoing COVID-19 response.

The renewed COVID-19 response highlights the continued importance of surveillance systems even after major reductions in reported cases nationwide. It underscores the need for sustained preparedness within state health systems to detect and contain sporadic infections. It also reinforces the role of coordination between federal and state health agencies in managing infectious disease risks, particularly in preventing localized outbreaks from escalating into wider public health concerns.
