NiMet weather forecast indicates a mix of sunshine, cloudiness and thunderstorms across Nigeria from Saturday to Monday, with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency warning that heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding in coastal communities.
The forecast, released on Friday in Abuja, outlines expected weather conditions across the northern, North Central and southern regions over the three-day period. The agency also advised residents, motorists and airline operators to monitor weather updates and take necessary precautions as thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are expected in several states.
According to the NiMet weather forecast, northern Nigeria will experience mostly sunny skies with patches of clouds on Saturday morning, while thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna. Later in the day, thunderstorms are forecast for Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba states.
In the North Central region, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory are expected to receive moderate rainfall during the morning, while afternoon and evening thunderstorms are likely across Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the FCT. Southern states including Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and Bayelsa are expected to experience moderate rainfall in the morning, followed by more widespread rainfall later in the day.
On Sunday, the NiMet weather forecast projects morning thunderstorms over Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba, with rainfall extending later to Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa. The North Central region is expected to receive morning rainfall in parts of Niger, Kwara and the FCT before thunderstorms spread across the region later in the day.
Southern Nigeria is forecast to experience light morning rainfall in Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Rivers states, with thunderstorms expected across the region during the afternoon and evening. By Monday, northern states are expected to record partly cloudy conditions during the morning, with light rainfall possible in Bauchi, Jigawa and Yobe before moderate thunderstorms develop later in the day.
The North Central region is forecast to begin the day with sunny skies and patches of clouds before widespread thunderstorms emerge during the afternoon and evening. Southern states are expected to experience cloudy conditions with light morning rainfall in Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Rivers, followed by thunderstorms across the region.
The NiMet weather forecast warns that strong winds may precede thunderstorms in affected areas and urges residents to secure loose objects, disconnect electrical appliances during storms and avoid taking shelter under tall trees.
The agency also cautioned that persistent rainfall along the southern coastline could lead to flash flooding. Motorists were advised not to drive or walk through floodwaters and to avoid travelling during heavy rainfall where possible. In addition, airline operators were encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support safe flight planning and operations.
The NiMet weather forecast advises Nigerians to remain alert by following official weather updates throughout the three-day period. The agency stressed that observing safety precautions before and during storms will help reduce risks associated with heavy rainfall, strong winds and possible flash flooding.
