Former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose has alleged that the recent school kidnapping in Oyo State was an orchestrated Oyo abduction aimed at blackmailing President Bola Tinubu. Fayose made the claim while commenting on the abduction of pupils and teachers from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State. The allegation has introduced a political dimension to the security incident, which has already generated widespread concern over the safety of schoolchildren and teachers.
The controversy follows the abduction of dozens of pupils and teachers from Community Grammar School, Baptist Nursery and Primary School, and L.A. Primary School in the Ahoro-Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area on May 15, 2026.
The incident attracted national attention and prompted intervention by federal authorities. President Bola Tinubu subsequently directed security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and approved the deployment of a specialised rescue team to support operations in the affected communities. Additional security measures, including the recruitment of forest guards, were also announced as part of efforts to address security concerns in the area.
The abduction sparked protests by residents, labour groups, and education stakeholders, while the Nigeria Union of Teachers expressed concern over the continued captivity of the victims.
Speaking during a televised interview, Fayose claimed that the kidnapping may not have been an ordinary criminal act. According to him, the incident appeared politically motivated and was intended to undermine the image of the Federal Government. “I sometimes believe that the abduction at Oyo School was orchestrated by the Oyo State Government to blackmail President Tinubu,” Fayose said.
The former governor questioned the circumstances surrounding the incident and argued that certain developments following the kidnapping raised concerns that should be examined. He suggested that the handling of the situation had created an impression capable of generating political consequences for the administration of President Tinubu.
Fayose also referred to past security incidents in Nigeria, stating that insecurity has historically been used as a political weapon against governments in power. He argued that the current situation should be viewed within a broader political context.
The allegation regarding an orchestrated Oyo abduction was made without publicly presenting evidence to support the claim. At the time the comments were reported, neither Governor Seyi Makinde nor the Oyo State Government had issued an official response.
The claim of an orchestrated Oyo abduction has generated debate because it links a major security incident to political considerations. While attention remains focused on securing the release of the abducted pupils and teachers, the allegation is likely to attract reactions from political stakeholders and public commentators.
Security experts and community leaders have continued to emphasize the need to prioritise rescue operations and strengthen protection for schools across the country. The incident has renewed concerns about attacks on educational institutions and the broader challenge of insecurity in rural communities.
