Suspected Gunmen Kill UNIBEN Student, Injure Two Others in Campus Attack

The UNIBEN student killing has triggered renewed security concerns in Edo State after suspected gunmen attacked a student of the University of Benin near the main gate of the Ugbowo campus, killing one and injuring two others in what authorities describe as a close-range shooting incident.

The University of Benin, located in Edo State, has experienced periodic security concerns in surrounding areas, particularly involving armed robbery and violent attacks along campus access roads.

Nigeria’s broader security environment has also seen increased incidents of gun-related violence in urban centres, including attacks targeting commuters, students, and residents in university communities. These incidents have raised concerns among stakeholders about campus safety and law enforcement response times.

Universities across the country have continued to engage security agencies to strengthen surveillance, especially at entry and exit points, following previous isolated attacks on students and staff.

According to verified reports, the UNIBEN student killing occurred on Sunday night at the main gate of the Ugbowo campus when armed men suspected to be gunmen attacked a student who was driving out of the university premises in a vehicle.

The victim, whose identity had not been officially confirmed at the time of reporting, was shot at close range during the attack. Eyewitness accounts indicate that the assailants operated in another vehicle and blocked the victim before opening fire. Two other occupants of the vehicle sustained injuries during the shooting and were immediately taken to the University of Benin Health Centre for medical attention.

Reports further indicate that the deceased student had recently completed an examination in the Political Science Department shortly before the incident occurred. Security personnel from the Ugbowo Divisional Police Headquarters were deployed to the scene, where they evacuated the body of the victim and secured the area for investigation.

A police officer, identified as SP Emmanuel, confirmed that the situation remained under investigation, noting that details were still unclear at the time of reporting. The UNIBEN student killing has also heightened concerns among students, particularly following reports of earlier isolated security incidents within and around the campus environment.

The UNIBEN student killing underscores persistent security challenges in university communities, particularly in areas with high student population movement and limited surveillance coverage at access points.

It also raises renewed questions about coordination between campus security units and state police commands in preventing armed attacks near educational institutions. The incident may further intensify calls for strengthened perimeter security, improved intelligence gathering, and faster emergency response systems around tertiary institutions in Edo State and beyond.
