Outcry at UNN as Students Protest Power Outage, Water Shortage

Postgraduate students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka staged a protest on March 16, 2026, over shortages of electricity, water supply, internet services, and unpaid support staff within the institution.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, is one of Nigeria’s federal universities and has historically been regarded as a major academic institution. In recent months, students have raised concerns about infrastructure challenges affecting campus life.

Reports circulating on social media indicated that water supply issues had persisted since February 2026 following a disruption to the central water system.

Students and observers have also referenced intermittent electricity supply and limited access to essential services within the campus.

According to accounts shared by participants, the postgraduate students gathered at the Vice-Chancellor’s office at about 8:15 a.m. during the protest.

They called for restoration of electricity and water supply, payment of cleaning staff, and improved internet access.

Chants recorded during the protest included, “Give us light! Give us water! Pay our cleaners! Fix our Gen! Give us internet!”

Videos shared online showed students attempting to access water from boreholes on campus. The footage also reflected concerns about limited access to basic utilities within student residential areas.

Participants said the protest was organised to draw attention to living and learning conditions affecting students pursuing advanced academic programmes.

The protest highlights ongoing concerns about infrastructure and service delivery within the university. Issues raised by students relate to access to electricity, water, sanitation services, and digital connectivity, which are essential for academic activities.

University administrations are responsible for maintaining campus facilities and ensuring a functional learning environment for students and staff.
