The APM 2027 defections campaign has gathered momentum after the Allied People’s Movement (APM) confirmed it is engaging serving senators, members of the House of Representatives and other political leaders over possible defections ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development comes as political parties intensify efforts to strengthen their ranks with influential lawmakers and key stakeholders in preparation for the polls, signalling another round of political realignments across the country.
In a statement, the party disclosed that consultations are ongoing with elected federal lawmakers and like-minded political figures interested in joining the APM before the 2027 elections.
According to the party: “Sequel to enquiries from our teeming members and supporters, the Allied People’s Movement (APM) confirms that it is holding talks with serving senators and members of the House of Representatives and other like-minded political leaders from across the country, who are desirous of joining the APM ahead of the 2027 general elections.”
The announcement marks another step in the party’s strategy to expand its national presence through the APM 2027 defections drive.
The party’s announcement coincided with the formal defection of Senator Mohammed Ogoshi Onawo from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the APM during Senate plenary.
Onawo was later received at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja by APM National Chairman, Yusuf Mamman Dantalle, alongside other party leaders.
The APM described the senator as an experienced grassroots politician whose public service record aligns with the party’s ideals.
According to the party, Onawo previously served two terms as Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, two terms as a member of the House of Representatives and currently represents Nasarawa South Senatorial District in the Senate.
Speaking on the party’s preparations, Dantalle reaffirmed the APM’s commitment to contesting and winning the next general election.
“Our commitment remains anchored on our slogan, ‘Nigeria First.’ We are determined to win the 2027 general elections, particularly the presidential election, so as to enthrone the right leadership to rebuild our nation and return her to the path of peace, unity and economic prosperity.”
The party said the ongoing APM 2027 defections discussions form part of its broader efforts to build a stronger political platform ahead of the elections.
Following his defection, Senator Onawo pledged to work with party leaders to strengthen the APM across the country.
“I have an unwavering determination and commitment to work with other leaders to deliver victory for the APM not only in Nasarawa South Senatorial District but also across Nasarawa State, other states of the federation and in the presidential election.”
The party also expressed appreciation to its supporters nationwide and reaffirmed its endorsement of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
