About 100 military personnel from the United States, along with equipment, have arrived at Bauchi Airfield in northern Nigeria to work with the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) announced on Monday in Abuja.
According to a statement by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, the deployment followed a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria to the United States for assistance in military training, technical support, and intelligence sharing.
The DHQ said the U.S. personnel are technical specialists in advisory and training roles, and not combat forces. All activities will be carried out under the authority and control of the Nigerian government, in close coordination with the Nigerian Armed Forces.
Under the arrangement, Nigerian troops and the visiting U.S. advisers will begin a series of joint training exercises and intelligence cooperation initiatives designed to strengthen the capacity of Nigerian forces to identify and counter extremist groups.
The military reiterated its commitment to upgrading operational effectiveness and enhancing the protection of communities across Nigeria. The DHQ assured the public it will continue to provide clear and timely information on the cooperation.
