Suspected Yahoo Boy Kills Friend in Delta After Dispute Over $1,000

Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have arrested a 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster, popularly known as a Yahoo boy, for allegedly killing his friend after a disagreement over a $1,000 transaction in Agbarho community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State. Police confirmed the incident took place on January 21, 2026.

Cases of violent disputes linked to alleged internet fraud activities continue to draw attention from law enforcement in parts of southern Nigeria.

The Delta State Police Command has maintained that efforts to reduce violent crimes and homicide are ongoing as officers respond to complaints and investigate arrests related to interpersonal conflicts.

Internet fraud, colloquially referred to as Yahoo, is a term used in Nigeria to describe various forms of online financial crime. The police and anti-crime agencies classify the activities as criminal and regularly pursue suspects suspected of involvement.

The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, said the suspect, identified as Mr. Oghenegare, and the deceased, identified as Mr. Courage, were both engaged in internet fraud business and had a disagreement. The incident occurred in the Agbarho community of Ughelli North on January 21, 2026.

Edafe said Oghenegare confronted Courage during the dispute and struck him on the head during a fight that followed, fatally injuring him. The suspect was subsequently arrested and detained at the Delta State Police Command headquarters in Asaba.

The police spokesman highlighted concern about what he described as “the increasing rate of murder cases” linked to temper, drug abuse and conflicts that could otherwise be resolved without violence.

In a video statement, the suspect told investigators that Courage, whom he described as his childhood friend, had “logged” him out of the process of the financial transaction, leading to the confrontation.

The killing has raised concerns about violent clashes among associates involved in criminal activities, and the dangers such disputes pose to community safety.

Violent disputes over financial disagreements can exacerbate insecurity in Delta communities, prompting calls for stronger conflict resolution and law enforcement responses.

Police statements urging the reduction of murders linked to disputes underscore ongoing efforts to address both the causes and consequences of crime in the state. Arrests and prosecutions of such cases are part of broader policing strategies to deter violent crime and maintain public safety.

The Delta State Police Command has arrested a 28-year-old suspected internet fraudster, Mr. Oghenegare, for the alleged killing of his friend, Mr. Courage, following a dispute over a $1,000 transaction in Agbarho.

The incident highlights challenges in addressing violent conflicts tied to financial disagreements in the state, as police continue investigations and press for measures to curb violent crime.
