Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, son of former governor and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) national leader Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has resigned his appointment as Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development and his membership of the Kano State Executive Council.
Kwankwaso was appointed as Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s administration following his nomination and confirmation in 2024.
The resignation comes amid broader political realignment in Kano State following Governor Yusuf’s recent exit from the NNPP and plans to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso has been a visible figure in Kano politics owing to his lineage and role in the state executive council, where he supervised youth and sports programmes and policies.
His father, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, served as governor of Kano State and has been a key NNPP leader.
In a statement released on Monday, Kwankwaso said his decision to resign was taken “with a heavy heart.” He thanked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for the opportunity to serve the people of Kano State and for the confidence reposed in him during his tenure.
“It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation as Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Youth and Sports Development and member of the Kano State Executive Council,” Kwankwaso said in the statement.
He expressed appreciation for the experiences and lessons gained while serving and offered “deepest gratitude” to the governor for the trust placed in him.
Kwankwaso underscored the importance of continued attention and support for the youth of Kano State. “As I resign, I pray that the youth of Kano State will continue to receive the attention and support they deserve,” he said.
He also voiced hope that sports development programmes and initiatives in the state “will flourish in the years to come.”
In concluding his statement, Kwankwaso prayed for blessings on Kano State and wished the government and its people “all the best.”
The resignation of Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso reflects ongoing political adjustments in the Kano State Government triggered by Governor Yusuf’s shift from the NNPP to the APC.
This development could influence loyalty alignments and the composition of the state executive council as the administration prepares for further changes.
The departure of a key figure associated with the Kwankwasiyya Movement may also affect internal party dynamics and the relationship between the former governor’s supporters and the current state leadership.
Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso has formally resigned his role as Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development and as a member of the Kano State Executive Council.
In his resignation statement, he expressed gratitude to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and emphasised the need for continued support for youth and sports development.
His resignation comes amid a period of political transition in Kano State and may shape future governance and party alignments.
