2027 presidential battle widens as Atiku, Obi, Amaechi, Makinde others position against Tinubu

Political activities ahead of Nigeria’s next general election intensified on Thursday as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and businessman Mohammed Hayatu-Deen signalled renewed interest in the emerging 2027 presidential battle against President Bola Tinubu.

The growing 2027 presidential battle comes amid increased coalition talks, party realignments and consultations among opposition figures seeking to reshape Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of the next election cycle. Several opposition parties are currently witnessing renewed membership activity and internal restructuring as aspirants position themselves for presidential contests.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, now aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), submitted his nomination form and stated that Nigeria requires urgent political and economic reforms. According to Vanguard, Atiku said, “It is time to save Nigeria.”

Former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi also submitted his nomination form under the ADC platform and criticised the current administration’s economic direction. Amaechi attributed rising hardship and economic pressure on citizens to policies associated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Referring to the “Emilokan” political slogan, he said the approach had contributed to worsening living conditions for Nigerians.

The developing 2027 presidential battle also includes former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who is now associated with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Obi reportedly stated that if elected president, he would serve only one term. According to the report, he said he would not seek re-election “even if a gun is pointed at his head.”

Businessman and economist Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, also contesting under the ADC, earlier submitted his nomination form with a pledge to focus on national development and economic reforms. Hayatu-Deen has repeatedly advocated for competent leadership and stronger national unity as part of his political message ahead of the elections.

Separately, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has continued to attract political attention following reports linking him to broader opposition consultations and coalition discussions. Although no formal presidential declaration has been officially confirmed in the report, his growing involvement in national political engagements has intensified speculation around his future role in the unfolding 2027 presidential battle.

The ruling APC, led by President Tinubu, is also expected to begin broader consultations and strategic planning as political activities increase across parties. Analysts note that the next election cycle could witness expanded coalition-building efforts among opposition figures seeking to consolidate support ahead of the polls.

Recent developments within parties such as the ADC and NDC indicate increasing movement of politicians, supporters and stakeholders across political platforms. These shifts are expected to shape alignments, negotiations and candidate selection processes in the months ahead.
