PDP-APM alliance claims spark fresh rift as Wike labels move “political 419”

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed claims of a PDP-APM alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections, describing the reported arrangement as misleading and politically deceptive. Wike stated that neither the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) nor the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had any official knowledge of such an alliance.

The controversy over the alleged PDP-APM alliance follows recent political developments linked to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and ongoing realignments within opposition parties ahead of the next electoral cycle. Reports had suggested that a coalition arrangement involving the PDP and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) was being considered as part of broader opposition consultations.

Speaking during an inspection of road projects in Gomani-Yangoji, Kwali Area Council of Abuja, Wike rejected the claims and accused political actors of spreading false narratives. He said, “When I say people are fraudulent, they think I am joking. And that is the 419 we are talking about.”

Wike further stated, “There is no alliance between PDP and Allied Peoples Movement or any other political party, as the case may be. INEC also knows that there is nothing called a PDP-APM alliance.”

The minister argued that ongoing activities within the PDP, including the screening of presidential aspirants and preparations for party primaries, demonstrate that the party remains independent and has not entered into any coalition arrangement. He challenged observers to monitor the eventual submission of candidates to INEC as evidence of the party’s independent structure.

Turning to Governor Makinde, Wike alleged that the Oyo governor was using the APM platform to pursue a personal presidential ambition ahead of 2027. According to him, “What you have is Seyi Makinde joining APM to be able to actualise his presidential ambition, which is already dead on arrival.”

The dispute comes amid deepening divisions within the PDP, where competing factions have continued to disagree over leadership structure, primaries timetable, and the legitimacy of party organs. Recent weeks have seen parallel meetings, conflicting statements, and disagreements involving camps aligned with Wike and Makinde.

Separately, reports had indicated that Makinde was expected to participate in political consultations linked to a proposed opposition coalition involving the APM and other stakeholders ahead of the 2027 elections.

Political observers note that the disagreement reflects broader tensions within opposition politics as parties intensify coalition discussions, candidate positioning, and internal restructuring ahead of the next general elections.
