The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has called for stronger police community partnership as part of efforts to improve security coordination and intelligence gathering across Nigeria. The appeal was made during activities marking the 42nd anniversary celebration of the Police Community Relations Committee in Abuja.
The Police Community Relations Committee was established to strengthen cooperation between the Nigeria Police Force and citizens through community engagement and intelligence sharing. Over the years, the committee has been involved in grassroots security awareness, mediation, and public support initiatives aimed at improving trust between residents and law enforcement agencies.
Nigeria continues to face multiple security challenges, including banditry, kidnapping, communal violence, and terrorism in different regions of the country. Security agencies have increasingly emphasized collaboration with local communities as part of broader strategies for crime prevention and public safety.
Speaking during the anniversary event in Abuja on Thursday, the Inspector-General stated that effective policing cannot succeed without active collaboration between law enforcement agencies and citizens.
The IG, who was represented by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of Logistics and Supply, DIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, described police community partnership as essential for intelligence gathering and early response to security threats. According to him, communities remain critical stakeholders in identifying suspicious activities and supporting preventive policing efforts across the country.
He noted that stronger relationships between residents and security personnel would improve trust, information sharing, and public confidence in policing operations. The event also recognized contributions of junior police officers and members of the Police Community Relations Committee for their support toward strengthening grassroots security structures.
Police authorities stated that the emphasis on police community partnership aligns with broader reforms within the Nigeria Police Force aimed at promoting community-oriented policing and increasing public participation in security management.
The renewed focus on police community partnership reflects increasing recognition that security challenges require coordinated responses involving both security agencies and citizens.
Enhanced cooperation may improve intelligence gathering, crime reporting, and conflict prevention at local levels. It could also strengthen public trust in law enforcement institutions, particularly in communities affected by insecurity. The approach aligns with ongoing national conversations around police reform, accountability, and community-based security structures.
