FG Warns Nigerians Over Rising Diplomatic Recruitment Scams Targeting Job Seekers

The Federal Government has issued a public warning over increasing cases of diplomatic recruitment scams targeting Nigerians with false promises of employment in foreign missions and government service. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that all recruitment into the diplomatic service follows verified official procedures and is not conducted through informal channels or private individuals.

Reports of fraudulent job offers linked to Nigeria’s foreign service have continued to surface, with individuals posing as government officials offering non-existent diplomatic positions. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs explained that recruitment into the diplomatic service is strictly handled through the Federal Civil Service Commission and follows established civil service procedures.

These procedures typically include formal application processes, screening, training at designated institutions, and official postings approved by relevant government authorities. The rise in diplomatic recruitment scams has been associated with broader patterns of employment-related fraud affecting job seekers across different sectors in Nigeria. Fraudsters often exploit high demand for government and overseas employment opportunities.

The Ministry warned that some individuals have been issuing fake appointment letters, claiming successful recruitment into Nigeria’s diplomatic service. Victims are sometimes asked to pay processing fees for documents such as diplomatic passports, travel clearance, or placement confirmation.

Officials clarified that no payment is required for legitimate recruitment into the Foreign Service, and all valid appointments are issued through official government channels. Diplomatic passports are only issued to qualified officials after formal approval and are provided without charge.

Security agencies have been directed to investigate and prosecute individuals involved in diplomatic recruitment scams, especially those impersonating government officials or institutions. Authorities also noted that fraudulent actors often use emails, social media platforms, and fake websites to spread misleading information about diplomatic job openings.

The government emphasized that all legitimate recruitment announcements are published through verified official platforms and not through private intermediaries. The persistence of diplomatic recruitment scams has prompted renewed calls for public awareness and caution among job seekers.

The continued rise of diplomatic recruitment scams highlights ongoing vulnerabilities in public awareness around employment fraud in Nigeria. These scams can result in financial loss, identity misuse, and emotional distress for victims.

It also underscores the need for stronger verification practices by individuals seeking employment opportunities and improved public communication from government institutions. Authorities say enhanced enforcement and digital monitoring are being strengthened to address impersonation and fraudulent recruitment activities.
