Effurun Shooting Spurs Calls for End to Impunity in Police Force Over IGP Response

The Nigeria Police Force has come under renewed public attention following the Effurun shooting incident in Delta State, with Effurun shooting prompting the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) to reiterate that impunity within the force will no longer be tolerated. The IGP stated that officers involved in unlawful conduct will face dismissal and prosecution, as disciplinary processes continue over the incident that led to the death of a civilian in Effurun.

The Effurun incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when police operatives in Delta State responded to intelligence regarding a suspect allegedly linked to a firearm-related offence. According to police accounts, the situation escalated during an attempted arrest operation, resulting in the discharge of a firearm by an officer.

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed that the officer involved acted in violation of established operational procedures governing the use of firearms. The case was subsequently transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary review and further investigation.

Following internal review processes, the Force Disciplinary Committee and Orderly Room Tribunal found that the principal officer involved, identified as Assistant Superintendent of Police Nuhu Usman, breached Force Order 237 and other operational regulations.

According to official statements, the findings established that the conduct was “unlawful, unprofessional and inconsistent with the duty to protect lives.” The committee recommended dismissal and criminal prosecution of the officer and others implicated in the incident.

The Inspector-General of Police approved the recommendations and forwarded them to the Police Service Commission for ratification. Upon completion of internal procedures, the officers are expected to be handed over to judicial authorities for prosecution over alleged unlawful homicide.

The IGP, in response to the incident, reiterated that the era of impunity within the police force was over, stressing that no officer would be shielded from accountability for misconduct. Police authorities also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and called for public calm while investigations and disciplinary processes continue.

The Effurun shooting case has intensified public scrutiny of law enforcement accountability in Nigeria, particularly in relation to the use of firearms during operations. The disciplinary actions signal a continued emphasis by police leadership on internal reforms and enforcement of operational standards.

The development also highlights broader concerns around public trust in security agencies, especially in cases involving civilian fatalities. Observers note that transparent prosecution processes may be critical in strengthening institutional credibility and reducing tensions between law enforcement and communities.
