Yobe adopts APC consensus primaries for 2027 elections amid stakeholder agreement

All Progressives Congress in Yobe State has adopted APC consensus primaries as its preferred method for selecting candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections. The decision was reached at a stakeholders’ meeting in Damaturu, where party leaders agreed on consensus as a strategy to maintain unity and reduce internal contestation. The adoption of APC consensus primaries reflects the party’s effort to streamline candidate selection and strengthen cohesion within its state structure.

Political parties in Nigeria are permitted under the Electoral Act to select candidates through either direct primaries or consensus arrangements, provided all aspirants agree to the process. Within the APC, consensus has increasingly been considered as a preferred option in several states to minimise internal disputes and reduce the cost of party primaries. However, the approach has also generated debate, particularly in states where multiple aspirants are seeking tickets.

In Yobe, succession planning ahead of the end of Governor Mai Mala Buni’s tenure in 2027 has intensified consultations among party stakeholders, with efforts focused on maintaining internal stability and avoiding factional divisions.

The resolution to adopt APC consensus primaries was contained in a communiqué issued after a meeting of key stakeholders, including elected officials, party executives, and other influential figures within the state chapter.

At the meeting, stakeholders also endorsed President Bola Tinubu for a second term, aligning the state chapter with broader national party positions ahead of the 2027 elections. Supporters of the consensus approach argue that it reduces internal conflict, limits campaign expenses, and allows the party to present a unified front during general elections.

However, discussions within the party indicate that consensus arrangements depend on agreement among aspirants. Where consensus fails, the party may revert to direct primaries in line with electoral guidelines. The adoption of APC consensus primaries in Yobe is therefore part of broader internal consultations aimed at balancing party unity with competitive political participation ahead of the electoral cycle.

The decision to adopt APC consensus primaries may influence how political competition is managed within the party in Yobe State. It signals a preference for negotiated outcomes rather than open contests, which could reduce internal friction if broadly accepted by stakeholders. At the same time, the approach places emphasis on internal negotiations and leadership influence in determining candidates, which may shape political alignments within the state ahead of the 2027 elections.
