President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted an invitation from King Charles III to pay a state visit to the United Kingdom from March 18 to March 19, 2026.
The announcement of the upcoming visit was made in statements published on social media by the official accounts of the UK Government in Nigeria and the British Royal Family. According to the UK mission’s post, the visit will be the first Nigerian presidential state visit to the United Kingdom since 1989.
State visits are formal diplomatic engagements that involve ceremonial hospitality and discussions aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between nations.
The official posts state: “President @officialABAT has accepted His Majesty, the King’s invitation to undertake a State Visit to the UK in March.”
The Royal Family’s statement adds: “The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accompanied by the First Lady, Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, has accepted an invitation from His Majesty the King to pay a State Visit to the United Kingdom from Wednesday, 18th March to Thursday, 19th March 2026.”
Both statements confirm that King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host the Nigerian president and the First Lady at Windsor Castle. The visit will span two days, with engagements scheduled for March 18 and March 19.
The UK mission described the visit as an opportunity to further strengthen the “enduring partnership between our two nations.” The confirmation of this state visit reflects formal diplomatic engagement between Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
It also marks a renewal of high-level bilateral interaction, following previous meetings between President Tinubu and King Charles III at international events. The two-day state visit presents an occasion for both governments to discuss areas of mutual interest, including economic and diplomatic cooperation.
