The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, says it has stopped a drug smuggling attempt at the Kano High Court and arrested a suspect. Officers intercepted a 20‑year‑old man who tried to bring a substance suspected to be Indian hemp into a custodial facility during court proceedings.
The suspect, who lives in Tishama Hotoro Quarters, Kano, was caught by officers from the Goron Dutse Custodial Centre as inmates were being escorted for their hearings, the NCoS said in a statement on Thursday.
Authorities said the man had concealed the suspected illicit substance inside a loaf of bread. NCoS officers found the package before it reached the inmate, he intended to hand it to.
The Controller of Corrections, Ado Inuwa, ordered that the suspect be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and possible prosecution, the service added.
Officials commended the vigilance of officers at the custodial centre for preventing the smuggling of illicit substances into the facility. The NCoS said it remains committed to ensuring safe, secure and drug‑free custodial environments across Kano State.
Inuwa urged the public, especially parents and guardians, to caution young people against involvement in criminal activities. He said the NCoS will continue to uphold its mandate to reform, rehabilitate and reintegrate offenders.
The NCoS said the action follows similar efforts in recent weeks to stop illicit items from entering custodial centres, as part of broader efforts to curb crime and protect inmates and staff.
