Kano Governor Says Defection Not Personal but in State’s Interest

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf states that his decision to leave the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) and join the All-Progressives Congress (APC) was made in the best interest of Kano State. He said the move was not motivated by personal ambition.

Governor Yusuf announced his defection on January 26, 2026, at a formal ceremony held at the Government House in Kano. The event marked his official move to the APC after weeks of political speculation and negotiation. Yusuf was elected governor in 2023 on the NNPP platform.

His defection comes amid broader political realignment in Kano State, where several elected officials have also changed party affiliation. A number of members of the Kano State House of Assembly and other office holders joined him in the move.

At the ceremony, Yusuf explained that his decision followed extensive consultations, careful reflection and assessment of the political and development needs of the state. He said aligning with the ruling party at the federal level would enhance Kano’s capacity to secure resources and accelerate development.

“I address you today with a deep sense of responsibility, clarity of purpose, and abiding faith in our shared destiny as a people,” the governor said. He noted that leadership decisions must be guided by responsibility and the future prospects of the people.

Former national and state APC leaders, including former Kano State Governor and ex‑APC national chairman Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje and Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, were present at the event. Barau Jibrin endorsed Yusuf’s bid for a second term in office.

The governor also announced plans to establish a Kano Elders Council to promote unity and support peace, reconciliation and sustainable development within the state.

Political actors within Kano have offered differing views on the defection. Some local APC officials described the move as a strategic step to enhance cooperation between the state and the Federal Government, potentially unlocking increased funding and federal interventions.

Meanwhile, elements within the NNPP and allied groups have criticised the defection. Reports from other sources noted that former NNPP figures, including the party’s national leader and supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, have reaffirmed loyalty to the party and rejected suggestions that they will follow Yusuf’s political shift.

The realignment also reflects evolving political dynamics in Kano State as parties position themselves ahead of future elections, particularly the 2027 general polls.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf maintains that his defection from the NNPP to the APC was driven by the broader interests of Kano State rather than personal ambition.

He emphasised the need for cooperation with the Federal Government to deliver development and stability for residents. The move has reshaped the political landscape in Kano as stakeholders prepare for upcoming national and state elections.
