The former President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Mr Ayuba Wabba, has announced the death of his father, Mallam Wabba Umaru, according to a family statement on Monday in Port Harcourt.
The announcement came as relatives, community members and associates extended condolences to the bereaved family.
The family statement said Mallam Umaru passed away at the age of 85 after a period of illness. It noted that he was a respected community leader whose life was characterised by service and devotion to family and faith, and that his passing has “created a huge vacuum in the family and community.”
In the statement, Mr Wabba described his father as “a pillar of strength, discipline and encouragement” who “taught the values of integrity, compassion and community service.”
The family invited friends and well-wishers to honour Mallam Umaru’s memory and to pray for the repose of his soul.
Burial arrangements are being finalised by the immediate family, and the statement said funeral rites will be conducted according to Islamic tradition, with details to be communicated in due course. It urged citizens and sympathisers to join in offering prayers for the deceased and comfort for the family.
Friends, colleagues and leaders from civil society have begun to express condolences and solidarity with Mr Wabba and his family, recognising the elder Umaru’s contributions to communal harmony and support for youth development initiatives.
The passing of Mallam Umaru follows a lifetime of community engagement and mentorship, leaving a legacy remembered by family, neighbours and faith groups.
Messages of sympathy have emphasised his role as a devoted father, community stalwart and faithful servant whose influence extended beyond his immediate circle.
The family’s announcement requested privacy as burial plans are finalised, and encouraged well-wishers to support one another in the spirit of compassion and shared remembrance.
