Arewa Think Tank Says New Tax Laws Can Boost Revenue in Northern Nigeria

The Arewa Think Tank (ATT) says Nigeria’s new tax laws offer a chance for Northern states to generate more revenue and grow their economies. The group said the reforms could help the region make better use of its natural resources and reduce dependence on federal allocations

ATT made the statement in a communiqué signed by its Convener, Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, in Kaduna on Tuesday. The group said the tax reforms could help the North improve its internally generated revenue (IGR) and support long‑term development if the laws are fully implemented.

The think tank said the reforms could encourage states to diversify their economies and support local industries. It also said that the laws could promote better cooperation between state governments and the Federal Government on tax matters and resource development.

ATT emphasised that the North has vast natural resources, including solid minerals and agricultural potential. It said that tax reforms would create incentives to leverage these resources and build stronger regional revenue bases.

The group also called on state governments across Northern Nigeria to educate the public about the reforms and encourage citizens to support the new tax framework. It said clear communication would help reduce misconceptions and boost compliance.

The tax reforms were introduced nationally as part of a broader effort to harmonise Nigeria’s tax system, improve compliance and widen the tax base to increase government revenue across all regions. The laws came into effect on January 1, 2026, following legislative approval and presidential assent.

Supporters of the reforms say they can help states streamline tax collection and reduce revenue leakages. Some regional and state bodies have already taken steps to domesticate parts of the reforms to suit local revenue needs.

Critics have raised concerns about transparency, clarity and potential impacts on different regions, but backers like ATT argue that successful implementation will benefit all parts of the country, including the North.

The message from ATT adds to a broader national discussion about how best to use the new tax system to expand revenue, support economic growth and create more jobs for Nigerians.
