The Federal Government will commence Kara Bridge repairs on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, with motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway warned to expect traffic disruptions.
The rehabilitation of the Kara–Berger Bridge is expected to last two weeks and end on September 22, according to the Federal Ministry of Works and the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, TRACE.
The project, directed by the Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, involves replacing deteriorating expansion joints on the bridge.
The intervention is aimed at improving road safety, strengthening the structural integrity of the bridge and supporting smoother traffic movement along the busy corridor.
The repair work was initially scheduled to begin in August but was suspended following concerns over the short notice given to road users and the need for a more effective traffic management plan.
With the project now set to begin, TRACE and other relevant agencies have advised motorists to prepare for lane restrictions, particularly during peak commuting periods.
The TRACE Acting Commander, Mr A. Ojerinde, said a multi-agency traffic operation would be deployed along the corridor throughout the rehabilitation period.
The operation will involve TRACE, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, and the Nigeria Police Force.
Ojerinde urged motorists and commuters to plan their journeys ahead of time and allow for longer travel periods.
He advised road users to leave earlier than usual to accommodate possible delays and remain patient and disciplined while temporary traffic restrictions are in place.
“We hereby assure the public that security and traffic agencies will work to minimize disruptions and keep traffic moving safely throughout the duration of the project,” he said.
The TRACE commander also appealed to motorists to comply with traffic regulations and cooperate with personnel managing movement along the corridor.
The agency said it would continue to provide updates on the traffic situation as the project progresses.
The commencement of the Kara Bridge repairs is expected to affect traffic movement around the Kara–Berger axis, a major route connecting Lagos and Ogun states.
Motorists using the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway have consequently been advised to plan their trips accordingly throughout the two-week rehabilitation period.
