SSANU agreement reached a major milestone on Monday as the Federal Government and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) formally signed the long-awaited renegotiated 2009 agreement, bringing an end to years of negotiations between both parties. The signing ceremony took place at the National Universities Commission (NUC) headquarters in Abuja.
The agreement was signed on behalf of SSANU by the union’s National President, Comrade Mohammed Haruna Ibrahim, while Mahmud Yayale Ahmed signed on behalf of the Federal Government. The development formally concludes a prolonged period of engagement between the government and the university workers’ union over improved welfare and working conditions.
Speaking after the ceremony, Comrade Ibrahim described the SSANU agreement as a landmark achievement in the union’s history.
“Today, 29th June, 2026, marks a historic and significant milestone in the struggle of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), as the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement was successfully signed and sealed at the National Universities Commission (NUC), Abuja.”
He added that the agreement reflected years of sustained advocacy, dialogue and commitment by the union.
“This development brings to a formal close an important phase of engagement, patience, sacrifice, dialogue, and strategic struggle by the union. It is not just a ceremonial achievement, but the product of years of consistent advocacy, responsible unionism, disciplined leadership, and the collective resilience of SSANU members across the country.”
According to Ibrahim, the renegotiated agreement addresses several long-standing issues affecting senior non-teaching staff in Nigerian universities.
He said the deal represents progress in the union’s demands for improved conditions of service, fair remuneration, salary review, CONTA adjustment and greater recognition of the role played by senior non-teaching staff in the university system. While celebrating the signing, he urged the Federal Government to commence implementation of the SSANU agreement without delay.
“While this is a moment of joy and appreciation, it is also a moment of renewed responsibility. The struggle now moves from negotiation to full implementation.”
He further called on union members to remain united and vigilant to ensure that the agreement is fully implemented without unnecessary delays, discrimination or exclusion.
“As SSANU celebrates this milestone, all members are encouraged to remain calm, informed, and united. The signing of the agreement is a victory for dialogue, perseverance, and organized labour. However, the true victory will be seen in its full and timely implementation.”
The signing marks the conclusion of a major phase in the relationship between the Federal Government and SSANU, with attention now shifting to the execution of the commitments contained in the agreement.
