Romance scam arrest: Police detain mother and daughter over ₦18m fraud case

The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed a romance scam arrest involving a mother and her daughter over allegations of defrauding a victim of ₦18 million through an online relationship scheme. The suspects were taken into custody following investigations into reported financial transactions linked to deceptive online engagements.

According to police authorities, the romance scam arrest followed a petition filed by a complainant who alleged that he was misled into transferring funds under the pretence of an online romantic relationship. Investigators said the suspects allegedly used fabricated identities and emotional manipulation to induce the victim to send money over a period of time.

The police stated that preliminary findings revealed coordinated involvement between the two suspects in executing the alleged fraud. The romance scam arrest was made after surveillance and financial tracking operations identified account movements connected to the reported transactions.

Authorities explained that the suspects allegedly created and maintained false online profiles to establish contact with the victim, gradually building trust before requesting financial assistance. Investigators said the funds were reportedly transferred in multiple instalments, amounting to approximately ₦18 million.

The police further noted that the romance scam arrest forms part of broader efforts to address rising cases of cyber-related fraud, particularly romance scams targeting individuals through social media and dating platforms. Law enforcement agencies have repeatedly warned members of the public to exercise caution when engaging with unknown individuals online.

The suspects are currently in custody while investigations continue to determine the full extent of their involvement and identify any additional accomplices or related transactions. Authorities said forensic analysis of digital devices and bank records is ongoing as part of the case.

Police officials emphasised that romance scams often involve psychological manipulation and long-term deception strategies designed to exploit victims emotionally and financially. The romance scam arrest underscores ongoing efforts to dismantle such networks and prosecute offenders under relevant cybercrime and fraud laws.

Security agencies have also encouraged the public to verify the identity of online contacts and report suspicious financial requests to appropriate authorities. They noted that increased awareness and vigilance remain key tools in preventing similar incidents.
