Buhari Son Secures Automatic APC Ticket for House of Reps Bid Sparks Debate

The emergence of an automatic APC ticket for Yusuf Buhari, son of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, to contest a House of Representatives seat has drawn attention within political circles in Katsina State and across the All Progressives Congress (APC). The development has triggered discussions on party nomination processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Yusuf Buhari has been linked to the Daura/Sandamu/Mai’Adua Federal Constituency seat under the APC platform. Stakeholders within the constituency had earlier expressed support for his ambition during internal consultations at the local government level.

The APC continues to deliberate on its mode of primary elections ahead of the 2027 elections, with options including direct primaries, indirect primaries, and consensus arrangements. The discussion around an automatic APC ticket has therefore become part of wider debates on candidate emergence within the party.

Yusuf Buhari formally declared interest in the House of Representatives seat following consultations with party stakeholders. In a letter dated April 3, 2026, he indicated his intention to serve the constituency through legislative representation.

He stated that his decision followed “wide consultations” and expressed readiness to seek the support of party members for the electoral contest. Local APC stakeholders in Sandamu Local Government Area reportedly endorsed him during internal meetings involving political officeholders and party members.

However, APC national leadership has maintained that there is no provision for an automatic APC ticket in its constitution. The party has consistently stated that all aspirants must pass through established primary election procedures.

Party officials have reiterated that nominations are subject to approved electoral guidelines, and no candidate is exempt from the primary process.

The debate over an automatic APC ticket highlights ongoing tensions within the party regarding internal democracy and candidate selection. While local endorsements may signal strong grassroots support, they do not override formal party nomination procedures.

Analysts note that such developments often shape political alignments ahead of primaries, especially when high-profile figures are involved. The issue also reflects broader national discussions on fairness, transparency, and party discipline in Nigeria’s electoral system.
