Ahead of the 2027 general elections, ALGON pledges full implementation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, prioritizing community development and effective service delivery.
The declaration was made in Abuja during the inauguration of the body’s new leadership and highlights a coordinated strategy to align local administration with federal development priorities.
The Renewed Hope Agenda, as outlined by the Federal Government, encapsulates a suite of policies designed to stimulate economic growth, strengthen social safety nets, expand infrastructure, and promote inclusive governance across Nigeria.
Local governments, representing the third tier of government closest to communities, are integral to implementing several components of this overarching agenda, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
At the inauguration event, the Acting National President of ALGON, Iliyasu Zakari, positioned the renewed commitment as a pivotal moment for the association and emphasised collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and other development partners.
Zakari, who also serves as Chairman of the Agwara Local Government Council in Niger State, said the inauguration “marks a significant step toward strengthening collaboration” to advance effective delivery of federal and state development initiatives at the grassroots level.
He underscored that the association’s leadership, including the Board of Trustees (BOT), is prepared to offer purposeful governance in all local government areas.
In his remarks, the Chairman of ALGON’s Board of Trustees, Shaban Ohinoyi, described the event as a defining moment in the association’s quest for unity, stability, and development.
Ohinoyi noted that internal challenges previously faced by the body had been addressed, positioning ALGON to contribute meaningfully to national transformation.
The inauguration also saw the appointment of the Chairman of the Senate Committee on INEC and Electoral Matters, Senator Simon Lalong, as Patron of ALGON.
Lalong highlighted the critical role of local governments in national growth, noting that President Tinubu has consistently advocated for local government autonomy.
Lalong said that Tinubu’s focus on local government autonomy, including engagement with the Supreme Court and ongoing constitutional amendment processes, reflects a deliberate effort to strengthen governance at the grassroots level.
He noted that the National Assembly was actively working to resolve constitutional issues surrounding autonomy to enhance administrative capacity and local responsiveness.
