Tax Reform to Create Opportunities, Ensure Fairness – Finance Minister

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has said Nigeria’s ongoing tax reform efforts are designed to create economic opportunities, promote fairness, and improve government revenue generation.

The Federal Government has been implementing tax reform measures aimed at improving compliance, broadening the tax base, and enhancing efficiency in revenue collection.

These reforms form part of broader economic policies intended to strengthen fiscal stability and support national development.

The government has also emphasised the need to reduce reliance on borrowing by increasing internally generated revenue through a more effective and transparent tax system.

Edun stated that the tax reform initiative is structured to ensure that taxation is equitable and does not place undue burden on vulnerable groups.

He said the reforms are intended to create a system where individuals and businesses contribute fairly based on their capacity, while also supporting economic growth.

According to the minister, the government is working to simplify tax processes and improve administration in order to encourage compliance and reduce inefficiencies.

Edun noted that improving tax collection would enable the government to fund critical infrastructure and social programmes, while maintaining fiscal discipline.

He also emphasised that the reform process includes engagement with stakeholders to ensure that the system is responsive to the needs of businesses and citizens.

The tax reform measures are expected to enhance revenue generation and provide funding for public services and infrastructure development.

Officials indicated that a fair and efficient tax system could improve trust in government and support broader economic stability.

The reforms also aim to create a more enabling environment for businesses by promoting transparency and reducing administrative bottlenecks.
