The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections in Nigeria will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2027, the commission said on Thursday.
INEC is Nigeria’s constitutionally established electoral body responsible for organising federal elections, including presidential and National Assembly polls.
Under Nigeria’s electoral calendar and legal framework, presidential and National Assembly elections are required to be held at least 150 days before the expiration of a sitting president’s term. The current president’s term ends on May 29, 2027.
INEC’s announcement confirmed that the 2027 presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on Saturday, February 20, 2027.
The commission said the date was determined in accordance with provisions of the constitution and the Electoral Act.
Details provided by INEC indicate that preparations for the elections will continue in line with statutory timelines and requirements.
Setting the election date establishes a clear timeline for political stakeholders and the public as Nigeria prepares for the next federal elections.
The scheduling allows INEC and other relevant institutions to organise logistics, voter education, accreditation and ballot distribution in line with electoral law requirements.
