The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Amupitan, has reiterated the commission’s commitment to ensuring that the 2027 general elections are conducted freely, fairly, and transparently.
Speaking at a public forum in Abuja on Wednesday, Professor Amupitan emphasized that the credibility of the electoral process remains a top priority for INEC. He stated, “We are determined to conduct elections that are free, fair, and credible. Every Nigerian deserves a transparent process, and we will ensure that all stakeholders abide by the rules.”
According to INEC, preparations for the 2027 elections are ongoing, including the upgrading of electoral technologies, verification of voters’ registers, and training of ad hoc staff across the country. The commission also plans to engage civil society groups and international observers to strengthen transparency and accountability.
Professor Amupitan acknowledged the challenges faced in previous elections, including logistical hurdles, security threats, and misinformation, but assured that measures are being put in place to mitigate such issues in the upcoming polls.
Political analysts have welcomed the chairman’s remarks, noting that clear communication from INEC can help boost public confidence in the electoral system. They highlighted the importance of credible elections for national cohesion, economic stability, and the protection of democratic rights.
The commission is also working to enhance voter education, focusing on the responsibilities of citizens and the importance of participating in the democratic process. INEC officials have stressed that all eligible voters should ensure their registration is up-to-date to fully exercise their franchise.
With less than two years to the 2027 elections, stakeholders continue to monitor INEC’s preparations closely, hoping that the commission’s initiatives will result in an inclusive and transparent electoral process.
